Shalane Flanagan celebrates after winning the women’s New York City Marathon on November 5. The 36-year-old became the first American woman to win the contest since Miki Gorman did so in 1977. She crossed the finished line in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 53 seconds, beating Kenya’s Mary Keitany, a three-time defending champion who is a legend in the sport. Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor won the men’s race with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 53 seconds.
