THE ‘ALARMING’ scale of poverty in the Highlands and Islands has been highlighted in recent reports.
According to the ‘End Child Poverty Coalition’, the percentage of children in poverty, after housing costs, in Ross, Skye and Lochaber is 18 per cent. Na h-Eileanan an Iar is close behind at 17.6 per cent and Moray has 17.20 per cent.
These findings follow a separate report from the Trussell Trust which found that, excluding Argyll and Bute, there were 4,211 referrals to foodbanks in the Highlands and Islands in the six months to September.
