Fourteen new whisky distilleries have opened since 2013
• Many whisky distilleries’ existing sites have been expanded to increase production meaning more warehouses.
• Be grateful to the phylloxera beetle for an outbreak of the wee bugs devastated 19th century French vineyards. Wine and almost all French brandy disappeared from export. Scotland was always a big, brandy-drinking country, showing historic links to France, but our newly legal, taxed and thriving whisky industry took advantage and by the time brandy exports were working again, whisky had taken the market share.
