AN EXCAVATION of ‘the Giant’s Grave’, a neolithic chambered cairn hidden on Islay, has revealed a massive ritual monument built by the island’s early farmers.
Slochd Measach is hidden from view deep in the plantation of Ballimony Forest on the slopes of Benin Tart a’Mhill, the highest hill on the Rinns of Islay. Only the tips of massive stone slabs, used to construct the chambers into which bones of the neolithic dead were placed, emerge from the peat and bracken.
