There is only transformation

On death and dying, and how to speak the unspeakable.

Concious Parenting

It’s difficult to talk openly about death with family. I have been exploring this lately and have had great experiences leading gentle discussions with my children about this important and life-charged subject.

I attended a workshop by Eat Pray Love author Elizabeth Gilbert recently. She shared a personal story about death and grieving with us, and the room fell into a deep and respectful silence. In the midst of that silence, she said: “There is no such thing as dying, there is life and there is death.” I felt the deep truth of this and it gave me some kind of peace when considering a dear friend who is very ill at the moment. It made me acknowledge her as very much alive and I made a pact with myself to be alive too. It reframed my thoughts around spending time with her, and about how I live my own life. The subject begs introspection. There is the sacred act of living and dying and then there is the way we perceive it, each in our own unique way. And for some, this is unspeakable, and in that space, it becomes difficult to share. It takes cour age to speak the unspeakable.

About OM Yoga Magazine

Welcome to the August issue of OM Yoga & Lifestyle magazine. We hope you’re having a great summer so far. In this issue we’ve got a couple of special reports, including a look at naked yoga and why people are loving it. Are you brave enough to try it? Liberating or exhibitionist: we’d love to know your thoughts! We’ve also got a yoga for back care report inside, as well as plenty of other goodies too. For starters, we’re kicking off a new five part series - A Brief History of Yoga in the West - where you can discover how the yoga you now enjoy reached your home town all the way from India. There’s lots of practical yoga as well, including our regular 360º Yoga anatomy academy and a great sequence for a head, neck and shoulders release. There’s something for everyone in this issue to keep you inspired on and off the mat throughout the month. Happy reading!
