Simon Griffiths dived into the canals of Paris for a surprisingly pleasant 5k swim

I usually understand basic French well enough to get by, but when I was in the water, with 500 people around me and a swim cap pulled over my ears, I discovered my comprehension was reduced to zero. I was at the start of the Paris Open Swim Stars 5k in Canal de L’Ourcq. I knew the finish line was to the south west, in Bassin de la Villette, but the swimmers around me were all facing north east! The course, I thought, was a straight line 5km swim along the canal, so why was everyone going the wrong way?
