Having escaped a cold, grey October in the UK, I was looking forward to plunging into the inviting waters of the Adriatic. Imagine my disappointment to find those sunsoaked, clear and calm waters were not that much warmer than those I’d left behind!
Luckily, that disappointment was short lived. In Lovran, where we stayed, the mountains plunge directly into the sea. Cold streams flowing off the mountains create pockets of cool water in the ocean. We soon found warmer water a short distance away from the shore. There were also unusual temperature inversions as the cooler fresh water sometimes sat above warmer patches of sea water. Instead of getting colder diving down to look at sea urchins, you got warmer.
