GETTING CHILLY IN CHILE

The Strait of Magellan is at the tip of South America, separating mainland Chile in the north with Tierra del Fuego in the south. It’s a stretch of water famed for its changeable conditions, strong winds and high waves.

Lynne Cox was the first person to swim the Strait of Magellan (1 hour 2 minutes) in 1976 and her female record had stood for 41 years. Gustavo Oriozabala from Argentina holds the record for fastest swim with his 2001 crossing in 51 minutes and 11 seconds.
