Deborah Durbin heads to Utah for a new swimming challenge: the Utah Triple Crown

Utah is home to dozens of lakes, including the second saltiest waterbody on Earth. Great Salt Lake is eight times saltier than the ocean. Almost nothing can live in this high salinity but that doesn’t stop Joshua Green and Gordon Gridley from swimming in it regularly. Joshua and Gordon are the founders and organisers of the Utah Triple Crown, a unique challenge where participants swim 10km in Great Salt Lake, 10km in Bear Lake and 10 miles in Deer Creek, all in one summer.

The official events are held in June, July and August respectively, but if you’re not a Utah local, the race organisers are happy to make alternate arrangements. For those not interested in swimming the full 36 kilometres, there is also a Utah Mini Crown, consisting of one-mile swims in each lake.

I travelled to Utah for a one-week trip in July with fellow Canadian swimmer, Trevor Connors, to a¤ empt the challenge. Trevor aimed for the Triple Crown while I went for the more modest goal of the Mini Crown.

About Outdoor Swimmer

In this issue we explore wild swimming in Scandinavia, where the right to roam extends to swimming outdoors – in some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. We also bring you reports from some our favourite events of the summer – more swims for you to add to your bucket list! We hear from Howard James and Sabrina Wiedmer about their record breaking swims – the earliest (and coldest) English Channel crossing and the first woman to cross the Dál Raita Channel, respectively. And if that all sounds a bit too hardcore and serious, Dan Abel shows us how to keep our swimming fun. Enjoy the magazine and happy swimming.
