“At the beginning it was about making a product that was needed, that should last a long time and made in the right way,” says Finisterre founder Tom Kay. “I wanted to build a brand that had conviction and passion about it.” I am sat with Tom on a picnic bench outside the Finisterre flagship store in St Agnes, Cornwall. What started in a flat above a surf shop has turned into eight stores across the UK as well as office and workshop units in a converted tin mine. The mine, Wheal Kitty, is home to a small community of surf style small businesses, including Surfers Against Sewage. The village feel and relaxed surf vibe of the industry hub is inspired: if I was local I would be asking for a hot desk adjacent to the sewing machine and fabric samples.
