Society has a sneaky way of teaching us to fear fat. We’re shown by the media (and by the superbly beautiful women on food adverts) that fat is bad and should be avoided by anyone aiming to follow a healthy diet and achieve a toned physique. But that’s not true at all. Sure, there are some fats — such as saturated fats and trans fats — which can justifiably be labelled ‘bad’. These fats star in foods such as crisps, doughnuts, cakes and pastries, and we’re all aware that these should be left to special occasions, as a rare indulgence. But some fats, such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (which include omega-3 and 6) can be very beneficial for the human body, and are an essential part of our daily diet.
