When I sent a text to a group of my closest friends that rambled on for several paragraphs before ending ‘I’m lonely, I want someone to be there for me’, I knew I had hit a low point. I don’t think I had ever admitted to being lonely out loud. Even saying the words to the people who love me the most, and whose response was to instantly find ways to be there for me, made me feel vulnerable. I was ashamed to be lonely.
