“There’s a Story Behind Every Colour”

Ever inspired by the magic of colour, Farrow & Ball’s creative consultant, Joa Studholme, loves painting her rooms in new and refreshing shades

Joa Studholme has always thought in colour. Her mother told her how, as a child, she described everything in terms of hue. Instead of asking: ‘Was that the holiday in Spain?’; Joa would ask: ‘Was that the holiday with the pink sky?’ Young Joa spent hours arranging her Caran d’Ache colouring pencils to make different patterns. Reflecting on this, she says, ‘I’ve always been completely batty about colour. I didn’t know as a child that it was my thing – but it was.’
