As we move into autumn, the visible plant life ‘dies back’ and that tan of summer gradually pales. This is the time to turn our attention to what is happening beneath. Far from a movement into dormancy, the soil now is at its most active and alive. As the showy leaves settle, it is busy digesting, assimilating, regenerating and gathering itself for the spring, when the greenery will shoot once more.
