Plaster cast for the mind

In troubled times, we heap on the pressure by telling ourselves we should ‘just get over it’, or be happy, or grateful. But Ali Roff believes awareness, and self-compassion, are the best treatment for our wounds

Research tells us that one in four people will experience a mental health problem each year. These emotional difficulties, when not life-threatening, can be compared to breaking a leg, perhaps, or catching that one virus that knocked you for six back in 2004. At the time, it was painful to endure, it took a while to recover and you’ll probably remember it forever, but you got through it in the end.

We’ve come a long way with regards to our openness around mental health, yet a recurring theme I’ve noticed is the abundance of ‘shoulds’ hanging over us, when it comes to our judgement of ourselves and our lives.
