Editor’s Note
LIKE MUCH of the world, many in the Canadian books industry were rattled, then angered, by U.S. President Donald Trump’s travel ban on refugees and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries. I have witnessed editors, authors, publicists, and publishers protesting in front of the U.S. consulate in Toronto in a show of solidarity with the Muslim community. (I also bumped into many on Jan. 21 at the Women’s March.) There have been open letters to Trump – including one initiated by PEN America, signed by 65 prominent authors and artists, including Margaret Atwood – calling for the executive order to be rescinded, and the end of any future measure that similarly “impairs freedom of movement and the global exchange of arts and ideas.”
