Canada Council changes mean authors are having to apply for their own writer-in-residence funding

In June 2016, just a few weeks before the Canada Council for the Arts announced major changes to its granting system, Toronto author Trevor Cole was invited to be writer-in-residence at the Richmond Hill Public Library. In the past, the southwestern Ontario library system would have applied directly to the Canada Council for funding to cover 50 per cent of the $16,000, four-month position. Under the new streamlined program, however, Cole was responsible for applying for the money to cover his own residency.
