The Overland travel experience
Reductions in Federal government and uncertainty in Victorian government funding from 1 July threaten The Overland, Great Southern Rail’s twice weekly train between Melbourne and Adelaide, whose history dates back to 1887. In mid-January this year, Malcolm Simister took the opportunity to find out for himself why anyone would use a train that takes 10½ hours for a journey that by air takes only 1½ hours!

A Goulburn Vignette
On Saturday 16 January, former Railway Digest Editor Scott Martin spent a pleasant day at Goulburn doing a photography short course, run by the Canberra Institute of Technology. Afterwards, he took the opportunity to put his skills to work recording an interesting series of train operations from his vantage point on the overbridge south of Goulburn Station.

Branch Line Romance
In 2012, and again in 2013, Barry Burton and friends set out to explore what was left of some of some intriguing New South Wales country branch lines. Where once a 30T or 32 Class locomotive would have trundled through the tranquil countryside on 1884-made rails, trailing the triweekly branch line mixed train.
