Update: Tucson’s New Gem and Mineral Museum

The plan is to exhibit the famous Tucson ring meteorite, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, in the new museum.

Special Note: My thanks to Dr. Alex Schauss, member of the University of Arizona Gem and Mineral Advisory Board for his technical assistance in reporting on the new museum’s progress.

In the February 2018 issue of Rock & Gem we reported on plans for the new University of Arizona Alie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum in downtown Tucson, Arizona. he museum is scheduled to open February 2020, just in time to welcome visitors coming to Tucson for the nearly 50 different shows during the months of January and February.

The University of Arizona was approached six years ago to be part of Pima County’s plans to repurpose the iconic and historic Pima County Courthouse in downtown Tucson. he plans include featuring the University’s museum. he exceptionally beautiful Spanish Revival Architecture Courthouse that opened in 1929 needed major facility upgrades. To strengthen the proposal, Pima County offered to invest $18.5 million to preserve the exterior while upgrading the entire interior to bring its infrastructure and services up to 21st century standards. And what an incredible job they have done!
