STAY CLASSIC, SAN DIEGO

Illustrator Bryan Kitch: “One of the things about San Diego is that everyone launches from the beach – it’s kind of a neat thing, especially for East Coast crews who have likely flown from snowy parts of the country and get to wade out into the Pacific Ocean in late March/early April. I hope this illustration catches that feel a little.”

Twenty-seventeen marked the 44th running of the San Diego Crew Classic along the sandy shoreline in Mission Bay. While his crews were busy sweeping the weekend’s racing – their crowning achievement being a takedown of a rapid Yale crew in the varsity eight – it’s the experience that the Crew Classic provides that keeps Cal men’s head coach Mike Teti and his Golden Bears coming back.
