Remembering the loss of Princess Victoria in 1953
Russell Plummer recalls the tragic day in January 1953 when North Channel vessel Princess Victoria sank on the Irish Sea in a storm, with only 44 of a total of just over 300 passengers and crew surviving.

FEATURES
NEWHAVEN-DIEPPE INTO A SECOND CENTURY
Continuing our series looking at major ferry routes from British ports, Russell Plummer traces the history of an English Channel connection with France that started back in the late 19th century and now employs two modern vessels which were introduced as recently as 2008.
ABANDONED THE STORY OF LINER-CUM-CRUISE SHIP MEDITERRANEAN SKY
Lying half-sunk and keeled over at the North Western end of the Gulf of Elefsina are the rusting remains of the Greek ferry Mediterranean Sky, once the passenger cargo liner City of York and part of the once-mighty Ellerman & Bucknall fleet. Henry Brayshaw traces the history of this once famous ship, which dates from the 1950s.
MARITIME MOSAIC BERGEN CALLERS
Bergen, on Norway’s south-west coast, is the country’s second biggest city and known as ‘gateway to the fjords’. The city’s picturesque location along Byfjord means Bergen is a common port of call for cruise ships setting out for the fjords. Its busy harbour is also the departure point for Hurtigruten’s coastal express and many other ferries. Patrick Healy’s photos from the port were taken in June 2005 and show some of the ships then visiting Norway.
BEAUTIFUL BULKERS
The ubiquitous bulk carrier is not considered a beautiful ship by many, certainly not after the ships have seen decades of service, by when they are streaked with rust. But, when just out of the builder’s yard, or with a fresh coat of paint, bulkers can be truly handsome vessels, as these photos supplied by Jim Shaw show.
THE MYSTERY OF HMS URGE
Paul Brown describes the loss of the submarine Urge, which left Malta for Egypt on 27 April 1942 and was never seen again . . . until the discovery of its wreck off Malta almost 80 years later.
