Identify your craving culprits

Do you ever feel like cravings creep up on you out of nowhere, even when you’re not hungry? You don’t want to eat just anything – only cake or crisps will do! The desire for one specific thing can be so strong, it feels like it’s what you ‘need’ to boost your mood, calm you down, or wake you up. What’s great about Food Optimising is that Syns are on hand to help you enjoy a bit of what you fancy. For many of us, though, certain foods seem to override our snacking off-switch, which means when cravings strike, some tried-and-tested strategies are needed.

My trigger food has always been chocolate. Even if I think I only want a taste, I soon find I’ve eaten my way through a whole family-size bar,’ says Evelyn Reynolds, who lost 7st 13½lbs at Heather Allard’s Slimming World group in Essex. ‘I knew I’d regret it afterwards, yet I kept doing it again and again.’ James Stubbs, professor of psychology at the University of Leeds, says that while hunger is driven by a physical need to eat, cravings are often a desire to satisfy emotional and rewardbased needs. ‘And when we don’t get the emotional satisfaction we want, we sometimes keep eating,’ he explains. ‘Studies have found that when people who report a tendency to overeat are given food they like, they like the food less as they eat it, but their “wanting” of the food remains.’ So even if it’s not making us feel better at the time, we keep eating because subconsciously we think if we eat enough, it eventually will.
