Wonder, dreams and memories

Susie Hodge talks to Lara Cobden, winner of The Artist Award in the 2017 Society of Women Artists’ annual exhibition

House of Solanum, oil and gesso on wood, 233⁄4x313⁄4in (60x80cm).

‘A greenhouse at night, lit with a collection of poisonous plants, caged in a house within a house. Once I had the initial structure and composition in place, I built up the dramatic atmosphere in this painting with layers of thin glazes.’

Lara Cobden paints the natural world from direct observation coupled with her imagination. ‘I studied at Brighton University – it was invaluable as a place to play, experiment and learn the craft of painting. This freedom and space to grow was an experience I treasure; I would love my daughter to have the same opportunities I had, but doubt I will be able to offer her that chance in the UK, with fees making college out of reach for so many people.’
