Martin Kinnear begins a new four-part series on colour by discussing how to choose and use a core palette for landscape paintings

As a contemporary artist – and we are all contemporary artists, whatever our style – colour matters. I know it’s tempting to go all tonal and use chiaroscuro and what not to dodge the thorny issue of using colours, but I’m hoping that I can use this series to help you grasp the nettle of becoming a better colourist.

We need to start with some ground rules of course, so here is the foundational fact about colour, a fact so useful that if you completely grasp it, it will change your work and tell you everything you need to know about using colour more proficiently:
