A musing of my own
Feeling an absence of the excellent Charles Williams’ musings from your January issue I’ve been thinking on the subject ‘to critique’. I firmly believe the objective kind is helpful to most artists, for if we don’t know what’s wrong with our work it’s hard to correct, unless by accident. If nothing’s ever wrong, then we are probably being too safe. I’m certainly no stranger to the process, now or in the past. During my fine art (painting) degree course at Maidstone College of Art in the 1980s, I was consistently vociferous in the weekly round of painting seminars that were designed as a platform to discuss our work. My approach attempted to get ‘underneath’ the images by examining motivations and effectiveness of expectation – essentially cause and effect.
