Bob Hewitt talks to Nashville-based guitarist, producer and solo artist George Marinelli about sanding down a ‘62 Strat and how he developed his inimitable ‘scuffle’ style over a fascinating career

When Bonnie Raitt hits our shores this month to open shows for her longtime pal James Taylor, the first lady of the blues, Americana and slide guitar will be backed up by her loyal band, most of whom have been with her for over 35 years.

Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist George Marinelli is celebrating a relatively modest quarter-century of laying down rocksteady grooves and tasteful riffs – as well as occasionally sharing songwriting duties – with Bonnie. A founder member of Bruce Hornsby And The Range, George has just released a solo album, Burn It All Down, laid down in his WingDing Recording Studio in Nashville.

Outside of his busy work schedule with Bonnie Raitt, George has also become a trusted collaborator with Nashville’s country-music fraternity, and has undertaken production and session work for Vince Gill, Joe Ely, Lionel Cartwright, Wynonna Judd, Reba McEntire and Dixie Chicks.

We caught up with George at his Nashville studio for more insight into a musical career spanning over 40 years – including revelations about how his Mexican-made Fender Stratocaster plays just as well as his treasured oldie from 1962…
