Happy days — your student loan has just hit your bank account and you’re wondering what to spend it on first. But before you run out, bank card in hand, remember to save money for the costs you can’t avoid, like bills and food. By budgeting at the start of each term, you can calculate how much all the essentials will cost you, set aside some money for emergencies and then be able to see how much you have left to enjoy.

The dreaded ‘B’ word! When they arrive they can give you a huge sinking feeling but don’t forget you can do things to make them less scary and cut costs. It is simply a case of using your common sense: turn off lights when you leave the room; don’t keep your laptop constantly on charge; and wear a jumper rather than turning the heating on. Often in halls your bills will already be included in your rent but it’s still good practice to start being more energy-saving savvy now. Not only will you be saving money, you will also be doing your bit to save the planet!
