Contraception

THERE ARE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONTRACEPTION AVAILABLE SO IT’S DEFINITELY WORTH THINKING ABOUT WHICH TYPE IS BEST FOR YOU

Aside from condoms, all other forms of contraception are female-based methods, but it’s good for you guys to be clued up about what each one involves too…

IUD/IUS

The Intrauterine Device (IUD) is better known as ‘the coil’ and is a 99% effective (depending on the amount of copper) form of contraception. It is a small T-shaped device made of copper and plastic that is inserted into the womb and provides protection for up to 10 years. It is fitted by a doctor (this usually takes around 20 minutes) and once in place it stops the sperm and egg from surviving in your womb or fallopian tubes.

The Intrauterine System (IUS) is the same contraption, but with the added protection of releasing the hormone progestogen. This makes it difficult for an egg to implant in the womb and thus gives you extra protection from pregnancy. The IUS lasts for up to three or five years (depending on the type). Neither the IUD or IUS protect you from STIs.
