A GAMBLE THAT WAS WORTHWHILE

Sonia Greene

Sonia Greene is my name, used onflickr.comsince 2008. During my life, I have lived and worked in five different regions of this country, currently living near Bristol, a most marvellous and stimulating city. I earned my living by selling the products of the manufacturers I have worked for, over the 20 years since leaving school at 16. In more recent years I was self-employed, doing the same thing, on commission-only. This can be a precarious way of living without saleable goods to show, but with good companies making products that shops and stores (and ultimately the general public) want, it is an agreeable, and can be very good way of earning one’s bread. A benefit is that I worked from home since the age of 25, and that gave some freedom to do the job the way I wanted. Of course results mattered - or no income! Working in the West Country for 24 years allowed me to know one of the most gorgeous areas of this country, and for that I am grateful.

I have two wonderful daughters, with whom I am in frequent contact, and have married 3 times, losing the best wife to cancer, aged 48. The last marriage ended prematurely and suddenly after 12 years. Not the best marriage probably, but certainly not the worst... no verbal or physical abuse, no unreliability etc. This happened when I was within 3 years of retiring, so the larger amount of my (accrued) funds contributed to her payoff. But I was happy she went and I have lived alone since then. No woman I have met since then appealed to me to spend the remainder of my days with.
