Schwules Museum

Interview with Sara Davidmann on her new Berlin exhibition “Ken. To be destroyed” at the Schwules Museum

JG: Even before you found the family documents concerning Ken and Hazel, your mother (Hazel’s sister) told you that the person you knew as “Uncle Ken” was actually a trans-woman. She also told you to keep this a secret; but you didn’t. What were your reasons for going public?

SD: I didn’t go public at first with this information, I just told my brother, sister, and my Trans-friends. But I felt that this was not something that should be kept secret. I have friends who are Trans and some of my friends have gone through very difficult times because of the ways in which people have reacted to them on the street and in public places. They are very brave in being open about who they are. Some people have encountered abuse on an almost daily basis. For me to keep quiet about the fact that I had a Trans relative seemed wrong. I felt if I kept it a secret, that would be colluding with the idea that there’s something wrong with being Trans - and I don’t think that.

About Transliving Magazine

This issue we have tried something a little different and gone for a duo cover, which features both a trans-girl and a trans-guy. Although Transliving has always been predominately more for the male-to-female members of the trans community we have, and always will, include features from trans-guys whenever they are sent into us. So if you are reading this and are a trans-guy or know of a trans-guy then please do feel free to send in your photos and stories too - we'd love to hear from you! This issue also includes fabulous features on hair removal, interviews with Sara Davidmann and Owen Nichols. We feature various readers views on labels and whether or not there really is a need for them! We also look at Gender Free: 'Clothing Without Labels' And as promised last issue, we also feature the 2016 winners of Miss Transliving International, Miss Transliving Golden Girl and last but not least Miss Transliving Diamond Girl. PLUS all our usual sections on where to go out in our Scene Guide, TV/TS Contacts, Events, readers' personal real-life stories & experiences, advice on fashion, makeup & image styling, Information, Support and so much more!....
