The Ladyboys of Bangkok

Photos by Jim Carey

Firstly I would like to say a very big thank you to Sandra who is the Box office/Sales manager, Mr Sak, the Company Manager, and Sonia and Naomi who are performers in the show.

It’s the 20th anniversary of The LadyBoys of Bangkok so what a great time to interview them.

My first questions were, where, when and how did the show first start? Answered by Sandra and Mr Sak.

The show was created, by their director Phillip Gandey who was on a trip/stopover in Bangkok and he wanted to see a LadyBoy show. So a taxi driver took him to a club called the Mambo Club. This was 22 years ago. In those days there was no other show like it outside of Bangkok. So he brought it to the Edinburgh festival. He wanted to bring something different to the UK, so he brought it over - but not in the form it is now! It was much smaller back then. He didn’t bring back the show the following year(?) and the people of Edinburgh were asking “Where are the Lady Boys, Where are the Lady Boys”? So he brought the show back again 20 years ago, and here we are 20 years later. Thank you to the people of Edinburgh.
