“Africa exposes you to a sensory feast beyond anything elsewhere. It takes only tiny details to carry me back: the keyboard error tone on my laptop, for instance, sounds like a scops owl, evoking a night in the bush. The tourism industry has conditioned us to thinking of Africa in images, but when I return, I find it is the sounds, smells and textures that make the deepest impact.” Mike Unwin has been contributing to Travel Africa for more than a decade.
