Earlier this month, the government said it will be cracking down on
operators running trucks (especially construction vehicles) in
London on its continuing mission to reduce accidents involving
HGVs and cyclists. It’s setting up a new Industry Task Force to
enforce strict safety regulations, and mayor Boris Johnson is also
considering a “Safer Lorry Charge” for trucks that fail to make the grade.
You’ll find all the details in the news, starting page 6.
This issue, we’re heading off-road with a look at some vehicles working
far from the beaten track. First up is NGC Powerlines’ unusual 18-tonne
MAN TGM 4x4, which the firm is utilising to install and repair telegraph
poles and overhead electrical supply lines. Based in the Scottish Borders,
the crane-equipped rigid also pulls a trailer and is spec’d for use in all
kinds of conditions. Read the whole story in The Big Deal, starting page 38.
Next up, we join West of Scotland as it sets about the mammoth task of delivering wind turbine
equipment to the £160 million Harestanes Windfarm in the Forest of Ae. The firm had to move no
fewer than 71 turbines along roads best suited to logging trucks, and you can find out how the
drivers and trucks fared starting page 46. Then we head to Africa to examine the role of tough-asold-
boots Astra rigid dumper trucks in the creation of the country’s largest dam (page 54).
Back in the UK, we take a trip to Müller Wiseman Dairies to get a closer look at equipment
spec’d for the firm’s milk collection tankers (page 62), and talk to recovery specialist Mick Gould
about his penchant for American marques including Kenworth, Mack, Peterbilt, International and
Western Star (page 67).
As always, there’s lots more besides – and don’t forget Trucking is now available digitally.
