Batteries are everywhere — from our mobile phones to our kitchen appliances — but it can be easy to forget how much we rely on them in our everyday life. However, once a battery’s lifespan is up, it needs to be disposed of correctly to ensure that the corrosive metals inside, such as mercury, cadmium, lithium and lead, don’t cause health and environmental problems by leaking out into the planet. Although the need to recycle as much as possible is becoming an ethos more people are living by, what to do with batteries can be a grey area — one that we want to demystify.
