In 1978, at 38, there were whispers that Jack Nicklaus was approaching the end of a fabulous career. He hadn’t won a major in three years and just the year before had faltered in the 1977 Masters, British Open and the PGA Championship despite being tied for the lead on the 71st hole.

Would Jack ever win another Major? That was answered with a comefrom- behind win in the 1978 British Open at St. Andrews in Scotland. With four holes to play, Nicklaus trailed little-known Simon Owen who felt the pressure of the legend coming on strong behind him. Jack was golden in the fi nal holes. Owen was not.
