Even in grade school, Wayne Gretzky already was on his way to becoming The Great One

There’s something instantly familiar about the voice on the recording, even if it seems impossibly young.

After answering questions about his size (“5-foot-2 and 93 pounds…I jumped up in the last couple weeks”) and goal-scoring prowess, the 13-year-old hockey player was asked by CBC radio host Peter Gzowski if he thought he might one day go on to a career in the NHL.

“All I can say is that I hope [I will],” the boy said.

For many Canadians, this was their introduction to Wayne Gretzky.

It’s not uncommon today for stories of schoolboy heroics to quickly spread. At the time however, intense scrutiny of minor hockey players was unprecedented.

Then again, so was the talent of Gretzky.
