THE 1980 TOPPS BASEBALL SET REPRESENTED THE LAST OF THE COMPANYʼS TRADING CARD EXCLUSIVE

The first weekend of the final year of a 25-year reign, an era of lawsui ts and exclusivity, began like any other

Take a right out the side door and down the driveway. Turn left to cover a couple of blocks and then right for a couple more. Watch the traffic. That’s a busy street and sometimes the cars don’t stop for the light. Head down the hill, take a left . Then walk a never-ending street of homes and parking lots until you get downtown. Take a quick right past the Subway shop and there it was: a generic-named drug store that sold baseball cards.

The card display faced the store entrance and stood directly across from the check out counter, no doubt so employees could keep an eye on shopliflers. The cards kept company with any number of brightly colored candy products, Ring Pops, Reese’s Pieces, Big League Chew.

But the only other cards to share the stage with those 1980 Topps baseball cards, as far as memory can chart, were from the movie “the Empire Strikes Back,” which was showing at the theater a block away. Those movie cards also came from Topps.
