★★★★★

Known variously as Tex Harper, Rudy Preston and Harry Head, singer Freddie Jean Harper got in on the ground floor of rockabilly as featured vocalist with Tommy Scott And His Ramblers. Bear Family’s 12-song dip into Harper’s limited but fascinating catalogue, a 10-incher with a gatefold cover and Martin Hawkins’ notes, features both sides of his two killer 4 Star singles— Cat Music and the LP’s title track, from 1954, were followed by the equally wild Jumpin’ From 6 To 6 and Dance With Her Henry, a cover of Etta James’ smash, the next year. Four Tired Car and its flip, Don’t You Go Chicken, out in 1957 on Scott’s own Katona logo, are just as riotous.
