Born James Marcus Smith in Houston, Texas, PJ Proby was given his stage name by fellow songwriter Sharon Sheeley, who wrote Poor Little Fool for Ricky Nelson and Somethin’ Else for her fiancé Eddie Cochran. Asked if it should be Proby with a ‘y’ or an ‘i’, she told him, “‘I’ is for girls, silly!”
