RECORD LABEL Guide to…

RECORDS

It all started with a humble market stall selling secondhand records back in 1975, but it didn’t take future Ace Records MD’s Ted Carroll and Roger Armstrong long to get the urge to release records on their own label. ‘We were inspired by indie labels such as Chess and Modern Records,’ recalls Armstrong. ‘Our first label was Chiswick, and although it was more of a pop label we always had one foot in the past.’

Ace Records was born in 1978, and Carroll, Armstrong and Trevor Churchill ensured the label soon became known for the quality of its packaging as well as the quality of the music. ‘With the advent of CDs you can really tell the story in many ways,’ says Armstrong. ‘We’ve got five people working full-time, researching the tracks and the artists and finding the photos to produce releases that are focused, and making booklets that add to the listener’s experience – sometimes the story behind the music is just as fascinating as the music itself. We also have our own studio and two full-time engineers so that the music is the best audio quality possible.’

We asked him to choose what he considers to be the most essential Ace Records releases of all time. See www.acerecords.co.uk
