«The homologation process of a track follows the guidelines of the FIA, to which the project is presented by the ASN (national motorsports federations, ed). In essence, it is a question of meeting minimum requirements, which sometimes even the project of an ‘occasional designer’ can exceed.» We asked Zaffelli to better explain what he means by ‘occasional designer’. «There are two types of projects: those carried out by people who design tracks for a living, that is a professional, and those who - for whatever reason, and even sometimes because with a certain degree of competence - design circuits occasionally or even ‘ just that one time’. Generally, a professional takes into account multiple factors precisely because he has the experience of years of work on his shoulders, of the randomness of which he is aware, of accidents, and we are talking about thousands of accidents in hundreds of possible different situations. In short, an irreplaceable baggage of skills when we want to create a circuit that is as safe as possible.»
