Walk  |  Summer 2017

‘WANTED – a Long Green Trail’ was the headline of an article written back in 1935 by Tom Stephenson, one of the Ramblers’ founding figures. The piece is widely credited as being the inspiration for the Pennine Way, the first national trail. Though certainly long, some who have walked the Pennine Way might argue exactly how much of it is green, and how much is more a sort of muddy brown.Nevertheless, the venerable trail has undoubtedly brought – in Tom Stephenson’s words – ‘health and pleasure beyond computation’ to generations of walkers, filling many, as he envisaged, ‘with the desire to explore every corner of this lovely island’. It’s exciting then, that by 2020, England should have a new ‘Long Blue Trail’ – namely, a coast path blessed not just with miles of exhilarating sea views but also a unique right of access that will enable everyone to explore the very edges of this lovely island, from beaches and dunes to cliŽ -tops and foreshores. It’s an ambitious project in which Ramblers volunteers have been instrumental. Mark Rowe reviews progress to date on p36.

The England Coast Path is just one of the myriad ways in which Ramblers volunteers are helping to build a walking Britain. We’re highlighting other volunteer successes on p24, from the efforts of faithful footpath secretaries and path maintenance teams to the dedicated walk leaders who are inspiring people to get active. They are all endeavours of which, I am sure, Tom Stephenson would have wholeheartedly approved.
