Woof! The wonderful world of canicross
Canicross is the fun, safe and social way to get _ t running with your dog
Words Tina Chantrey
Canicross has grown exponentially in popularity over the last five years, as people have discovered the enjoyment, motivation and team work that running with your dog brings. There are many benefits to both the human and the dog; exercising with your dog creates a special bond between the two of you, and it’s also a great way to save time – you will no longer have to dash to the gym and then rush home for walkies.
Benefits for both of you
The team at DogFit (dogfit.co.uk) have been introducing people and their dogs to the sport for over five years and they believe you’d be hard pushed to find a more enthusiastic run buddy than your very own canine companion.
Ginetta George, who started up DogFit with her business partner Gail Walker, took up canicrossing with her German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP), Coco, over five years ago. She says, “Before I discovered canicross, I wasn’t a runner by any means. Being able to share in a sport with Coco really appealed to me. Most of the time I forget I’m exercising as it’s so much fun. Since starting the sport, I’ve lost weight and toned up. I’ve also met a whole new group of friends who love dogs too and want to keep fit.”
The sport is also a perfect training tool as it keeps your dog stimulated and can help with any behavioural training, adds Ginetta. “We run with many rescue dogs who enjoy not only the physical side of the sport, but the brain work that goes alongside as well. Canicross really benefits nervous, anxious and reactive dogs. It gives them a focus and a job to do.”
