CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES

Don’t shoot off in every direction at once. Focus your energy on one thing at a time, says Adrian Magson

I recently heard a writer describe writing as a series of small battles, with each part of the process competing for attention and, in the end, getting in the way of completing anything productive. I sympathise. Writing has also been compared with herding cats – and with good reason; the elements involved in bringing a book out of the bone and onto the page can be involved, from finding the allotted time and space, to fleshing out those tiny, currently unformed nuggets you feel are key to your next success; from building characters to scene-setting, to editing, researching… and the many other components that go into a successful piece of storytelling.
