Dorothy Koomson takes her readers on a rollercoaster with her emotional thrillers, as Tina Jackson discovers

Thinking of reading a Dorothy Koomson novel? The bestselling author’s fans will already know this but if you haven’t read one before, best clear your diary. Make sure you’ve nothing else on. And have a box of tissues to hand. Dorothy is the queen of the absorbing, involving emotional thriller, and her stories so full of twists, turns and cliffhangers that the pages practically turn themselves.

‘Emotional thrillers are different from other thrillers in that they focus on the emotions of the characters,’ says Dorothy. ‘Something terrible has happened, and rather than focus on the detection of the crime, it’s more focused on how the characters deal with it. A lot of crime novels get caught up in the information element, but the people who are the victims, and the survivors, are my focus. I want to focus on the aftermath of crime – how people deal with it emotionally; how they handle it – rather than deal with the solving.’

Koomson fans have a lot to keep them happy to this year – last year’s gripping novel The Friend is out in paperback, there’s a new book, The Brighton Mermaid, due in May, and for anyone wanting a quick Dorothy fix, The Beach Wedding is one of the six titles featured in The Reading Agency’s Quick Reads series for 2018. It may be short but it’s an object lesson in how much gripping story you can pack into less than 100 pages.
