INTERNATIONAL ZINE SCENE

WRITERS’ NEWS

Rag Queen Periodical is a stroppy ‘femmecentric’ and literary zine published quarterly in May, August, November, and February. The editorial team pride themselves on ‘featuring the dynamic voices of femme and non-binary writers’. Some of the themes the team like explored are: ‘embodiment, sexuality, ostracism, love, disability, mental illness, magical realism, anger, joy, advocacy’. Read the zine and see the guidelines before submitting, on the website: www.ragqueenperiodical.com Response time is ‘two weeks before our issue’s debut date’. Payment is ‘if possible’ for first rights.

Projecttile is another stroppy feminist zine. The editorial team call it ‘a literary journal… specialising in nontraditional writing with a feminist bent’. They enjoy hybrid forms, don’t have guidelines and cover letters are not required, so thoroughly digest what they publish to ensure you hit the right tone when you submit.

The Cabinet of Heed is a real charmer, a zine with a nod to Sir Terry Prachett’s Discworld cabinet. It’s ‘a multidrawered piece of furniture that grows hungry at various times of the year’, when it needs feeding with great writing. Editor Simon Webster is open to submissions of ‘quirky, off-centre fiction or poetry that might astound and inspire’.

Short stories should be up to 4,000 words, no minimum; poems, up to four per submission, should delight in wordplay and invention. Submit by email with the title in the subject line of the email and attached doc or docx file, no pdfs, or pasted into the body, to: cabinetofheed@hotmail.com Submission opportunities open and close according to whether drawers are filled or not. Each accepted piece of work is accompanied by an image. Writers who have an image they’d like to accompany their work should submit it with their piece. There’s no pay but it’s a fun place to stretch your writing skills and submit something different.
