The art of the anthology

Alex Davis looks at how an editor puts together an anthology, and how this affects writers

As someone who’s written for many, many years, it’s always a little nervewracking to send short stories out there, and equally slightly disheartening to receive those rejections that every writer has. Sure, the acceptances are always sweet moments, but as a writer it sometimes feels hard to understand why some stories landed a spot in various anthologies and others went by the wayside – especially when you might think a story is just right.

Those sentiments were very much the case until I came to editing an anthology for the first time. The role of the editor in that context – bearing in mind how many different ways that particular term gets used – is to manage, read through and select all of the stories for a given anthology. And that in itself is no easy task – that can be quite a weight of stories to get through, and then there’s the process of selecting what goes in, then the running order, which is another matter entirely!
