The Story Seed Vault publishes fiction of any type, as long as it has a basis in science, and would meet the length limits of publication on Twitter. Writers worldwide are welcome to submit up to three pieces. Read the detailed guidelines for a list of acceptable science sources at the website.

Submissions are open ‘from the 10th to the 24th of every month’. Microfiction, no more than 150 characters, and ‘long fiction’, 150-200 characters, should be concise, clear and scientific. Submit in the body of the email or attach a file, with Story Seed Vault Submission in the subject line and include a link to the science story/article/idea which inspired the work, to: Include a short bio, no more than 140 characters.

Response time is ‘14-21 days’. Payment is Aus$3 for short pieces and only $2 per long story: the editors prefer brevity and reward it.


The Incubator Journal is an Irish publication which used to publish fiction only from Ireland. Now the editors have expanded their reach and The Incubator Selects, first issue in July, publishes stories from writers anywhere, 2,000-10,000 words.

Submit between 1 April and 30 June, or 1 October and 31 December, as a doc file with brief covering letter, by email: Response time is ‘within twelve weeks’ and payment is ‘nominal’.


Terse describes itself as ‘a funky little liminal space focused on identity, the body, writing practices, technology, futures, and art’.

It is open all year for submissions about ‘art, technology, embodiment, critical theory, and selfdiscovery selfdiscovery (among other topics)’. They also supply optional prompts for writers, and will consider a wide range of mixed style/ media work. Submit by email,, following the guidelines on the website. Prose should be no more than 7,000 words. Response time is ‘2-3 weeks’. Payment is $10.
