Turn over a new leaf

If you’ve no room for a traditional Christmas tree, try one of these home-made designs to get an alternative festive look

Evergreen felt tree

You will need

✓drill ✓wooden dowel, around £2.50 for five 30cm lengths, eBay ✓round log slice (we cut out own but for pre-cut try eBay) ✓glue gun 42 sheets wool felt in Holly Green, £1.50 per sheet, Blooming Felt ✓scissors ✓papier mâché cone, from a selection at The Little Crafty Bugs Company ✓assorted berries and beads

Gold cylinder candle, £11.99; gold honeycomb candle, £8.50; berry sprig and candles, from a selection, all Gisela Graham

◼ Using a drill bit just slightly larger than the diameter of the wooden dowel, drill a hole in the centre of the log slice. Place the dowel in the hole, securing with hot glue.

◼ Next, start to cut out leaf shapes from the green felt. Place a dab of hot glue at one end of each, then pinch together to make more of a 3D leaf shape. Once you have plenty of these cut and glued, start sticking them on to the cone, starting at the top. Work your way down, adding leaves all the way round and overlapping slightly to avoid any gaps. Once the cone is fully covered, you may need to cut a few slightly smaller leaves to create a neat finish at the very top.
