A funky British theme works perfectly for us

With the box room becoming an office, Rachael and Adrian Rowbotham had to design a bedroom fit for children of differing ages

A well-dressed window combining a simple blind with curtains held back by casual tie-backs not only looks cute during the day, but serves to totally black out the room at night, helping the little ones to sleep longer

Rachael Rowbotham, 38, a graphic designer and her husband, Adrian, 37, a web designer, bought their three-bedroom detached 1950s home in Lincolnshire three years ago. Their kids, Lily, six, and, Henry, two, did have separate bedrooms, but as Adrian works from home quite a bit it became imperative that he had his own dedicated office. ‘We decided to turn Henry’s nursery into a study and put both kids into what was Lily’s room,’ explains Rachael. ‘Lily’s room was incredibly dated. We hadn’t touched it since we’d moved in. It had an awful built-in beige wardrobe that went up each side of the bed and across the wall on top of it. The units above the bed were a pain to reach and totally unsuitable for a child.’
